Birth
Preparing for your baby's arrival
What there is to organise in the final weeks, without rushing.
Updated on August 17, 2026
The final weeks before a birth often feel like there is a lot left to do.
In practice, the essentials come down to a few decisions and a few purchases. The rest can wait, or be sorted out afterwards.
What actually matters
Three things need to be ready before the day: something to leave quickly with, somewhere for the baby to sleep, and a way to bring them home.
Everything else — decoration, stacks of clothes, equipment — can be adjusted later, once you know what you actually need.
Key points
- The bag can be ready several weeks in advance.
- The car seat must be fitted before you leave, not on the way back.
- Administrative steps have deadlines: worth identifying them early.
- One single place for paperwork saves a lot of searching.
What to do
Go through the hospital bag checklist and tick what is already done. What remains will give you an honest sense of the work left — often less than expected.
